Nature's raw side, Part 2
Chris and I decided to return to the marsh this evening to see if the owls were in the same spot, since they tend to roost during the day. Sure enough, one was still sitting in one of the pines. It soon, however, flew onto one of the wood duck nesting boxes, shown at the top, where it sat for awhile, constantly rotating its head, especially as there were several red-winged blackbirds who were harassing it (that's one of the blackbirds behind the owl's head). It next moved to the top of the stub of a dead pine tree, where the blackbirds continued to swoop over its head. In the bottom shot, it had fluffed out its feathers making it look twice its size. I think its location this evening is strong evidence that this has become normal practice for these birds. By late evening they would be in hunting mode.
