A common caterpillar
This Woolly Bear caterpillar is the first one I've seen of the season. It was moving across the path when I noticed it. As I tried to get a close-up shot, it attempted to hide in the vegetation, so I had to do a bit of finagling to get this shot. The Woolly Bear is the larval stage of the Isabella Tiger Moth. It will overwinter as a caterpillar, then pupate and emerge as the moth in the spring. According to my insect field guide: "Contrary to popular belief, the width of its orange band in no predictor of the severity of the coming winter."
